Poetic Fragments by Casey Dorman

             I've Grown Too Old

I’ve grown too old to dare to act

Though all my dreams remain intact

But lost in memory.

The will to risk what I possess

Falls limp and cringing from the stress

Of encountering even minor obstacles

I try to resurrect the past

The  brave ambitions meant to last

But lost amidst more pressing considerations.

For now I have the time and means

To harken back to those old dreams,

Which struggle to reassert their presence

But cautionary admonitions thrust

Their fear of things that might be lost

If following old passions should prove dangerous.

And what have I to lose?

         Musings of Old Age

I sip a simple cup of coffee by the sea,

No latte, nothing fancy only me

Sitting ‘midst a boisterous crowd

Of gangling teens, pumped-up young men,

Blossoming girls, and strutting women,

Swaying hips  and suntanned legs, seducing me

Each time they pass, and families too:

Children, parents, hand-in-hand

Each person with somewhere to go.

And always with someone to meet.

Everyone going somewhere

With someone

I watch with no particular destination

Or assignation on my day’s agenda.

I have the time, I tell  myself, in satisfaction,

And wonder at my hollow repetitions

Of assurance, reminding me I have

The time to do whatever I decide to do,

To follow every whim or fancy,

Complete whatever I should choose to start.

I’ve never had the time before, never had the time to sit

And watch and think and do whatever I should choose to do.

Whatever I should choose.

I should choose.
